What Is a Super Ju-Nel Designation?
Super Ju-Nel is a coveted designation for the homes that exhibit quintessential Ju-Nel characteristics and a high level of as built originality. These homes should theoretically carry a higher level of desirability and valuation.
Both exterior and interior preservation is critical, and one without the other would disqualify a home from the designation. Some level of original is critical. Kitchen and bathroom originality are not important criteria, nor is paint color, window coverings or other decorative elements. Period appropriate updates are always advised.
The following six criteria are important aspects of designation. The absence of one would not necessarily disqualify a home from consideration; e.g., many Ju-Nel homes did not have original, unpainted wood walls or exterior screening.

A vast number of Ju-Nel homes feature adobe brick. It is a hallmark of and one of the easiest ways to spot authenticity. Painted exterior brick would be a disqualifier. Paint on wood can be changed - paint on brick is almost impossible to remove and permanently alters the visuality.

Many Ju-Nel homes feature raised panel entry doors, and a number of these remain to this day. Often in excellent original condition, these doors provide a 'from the street' distinction to most neighboring homes.

The Flabiano House is one of only a few Ju-Nel examples found to have both wooden and masonry screening. The masonry screening appears partly original, it is not determined if the wood screens are original or re-built.

Brick pavers and Saltillo tile are hallmarks of Ju-Nel flooring examples. The best homes have their original pavers or Saltillo tile flooring. Some early homes have parquet flooring.

Raw wood finishes as we see in this example are very rare and highly desirable. Not often seen as many have been painted.

Rowley and Wilson used the fireplace as a central design feature of the living area. An unaltered Ju-Nel fireplace is very special. This is the Wilson family home.

A Favorite Ju-Nel
10476 defines Rowley and Wilson in such an exemplary fashion. While it is one of the only Ju-Nel homes found with terrazzo flooring, which is not typical, I believe it adds to, not detracts from the exceptionality of the home.
In this one image alone, we see unaltered exposed beams, original flooring, original fireplace and the presumed original unpainted wood paneled wall.
The exterior reveals unaltered beams, unpainted adobe brick, original entry doors and possible original wood and brick screening.
10476 is perhaps one of the finest examples of Rowley and Wilson's work. It is possibly one of the most important examples of mid-century modern architecture in East Dallas.
